Physiatry and Physical Medicine

Matthew W. Karshner, M.D., Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, has joined the Medical Staff at Southeast Hospital. He is certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Dr. Karshner will serve as Medical Director of Inpatient Rehabilitation/Physiatry at Southeast and will also have an outpatient clinic at HealthPoint Plaza in Cape.

Physiatrists help the treatment team coordinate the rehabilitation process for patients: who have suffered a stroke or are dealing with other neurological disorders; patients with brain or spinal cord injuries; patients with muscular dystrophy or cerebral palsy; and many others.

Dr. Karshner

Dr. Karshner's experience

Dr. Karshner holds a B.A. degree from Kenyon College in Gambier, OH. He received his M.D. degree from the Ohio State University College of Medicine in Columbus.

He completed a transitional internship at the Medical College of Ohio, Toledo, and a residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City. Dr. Karshner also completed a clinical research fellowship at the Medical College of Ohio, Department of Radiation Oncology, and a fellowship in Musculoskeletal Medicine at Louisiana State University Medical Center, New Orleans.

He has served as a senior instructor and assistant professor at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Rochester, NY.
