Augmentative Communication Devices
Cathy Tanksley, MA, CCC/SLP, CPCRT, and Nikki Jines, MA, CCC, SLP have found a resource for Augmentatitve Communication Devices.
Augmentative communication is the utilization of electronic and non-electronic devices to allow people to communicate when they are unable to use talking efficiently. At Healthpoint Plaza, we utilize a team approach for evaluation and training to use these devices. Utilizing the expertise of the speech/language pathologists, occupational therapists, and physical therapists, the speech/language pathologist (speech therapist) is able to decide which device is most appropriate for each patient. Devices are available from various manufacturers and vary in cost, size and capacity.
These devices are loaned to Southeast Missouri Hospital on a 6-month basis and can be used to find the appropriate device to assist communication for those with severe speech impairments.
